Pedro was born on April 26th 1910 in Murueta. His daughter couldn’t meet him alive , nor could his grandchildren, but his nearer relatives (wife, brother-in–law, and so) witnessed his life and he also left a handwritten yellowish paged diary kept in perfect conditions. On July 16th 1936 he himself gave the diary the name of “La guerra civil española para un vasco” (The spanish civil war for a Basque).
Everything he did during his life was greatly influenced by his uncle Eustakio, a Franciscan priest living in Cuba who transmitted him the idea of patriotism.
On Saturday, April 24th 1937, he got married to Maria Santos from Busturia. Two days later, the whole family were going for a walk up to Parisi neighbourhood when they became witness of Gernika’s bombing. As Maria Santos used to say some years later, hidden among the bushes, they were able to see planes coming from the sea.
Planes flew high over Matxitxako and down to Gernika, and passed over so near ,they could even see pilots’ heads.
At the moment, uncle Juan José, a member of Falange, was also there, and when they asked him where they could be from, he explained the planes were German because of the cross drawn on them.
At the time, Pedro had a job at Banco de Vizcaya and he used a Norton motorcycle, carried from England to go to work. As francoists (followers of Franco) were starting to confiscate everything, Pedro thought he’d rather give the motorcycle to the Basque Government, and it was that way that he joined the first Ertzaintza team. With the help of his Norton, he was in charge of bringing and carrying messages across the frontier. Not long later, he became Telesforo Monzón’s assistant.
When francoists began getting into the Basque Country, he was sent to Santoña and he was the person in charge of sending children abroad by ship. On board of a ship called “Seven Seas´ foam”, he left northwards. He met there some other Basques who used to say that he helped the so called French resistance. He stayed with a family in The Landes, and soon Germans took him as a prisoner and brought him to a prison camp in Bologne-sur-Mer.
Although he could escape, he died from tuberculosis in July 1945.
